I've always really liked Xalos' rule on swearing:
If you type it correctly, you can say (almost) anything you want.
If it gets typed incorrectly or evades the chat filter somehow, he gets pissed.

It's a good way of doing it, giving people the option of not hearing them, if they find them offensive.
