I always liked the floating platforms for a few reasons.
They are a predictable medium, meaning that there is no irregularity to them that might possibly mess you up as you're fighting. I know people that would never fall. Ever.
They are aesthetically pleasing in most environments. They provided an opportunity to make some nice, simple patterns and experiment until you thought they suited whatever setup you had in place, including the map. Something that looked amazing on a dark map might just be mediocre on a lighter one.
They also made it easier to measure distance from base to base and landing point to landing point.
Their simplicity made for less distraction.
Their lack of ramps or decorative bricks ruled out the possibility for exploits.
If using multiple layers, one could more easily avoid vertical collision due to lack of thickness.
But idk, that's just me.
