Author Topic: My Parents & Violent Games  (Read 1039 times)

Hello everyone. Today I'd like to talk about the problem I've been having with my parents over violent games, and how they keep making points as to why I shouldn't be able to play these games. You probably all heard about the Connecticut Shooting. This is one of big concerns of my parents. They like to believe that all these violent people enjoy playing these games. This of course is a very minor reasing as to why people do the things they do. The shooter in the massacre had aspergers, and was capable of doing these things, and the boys mother knew this. This is why I'm annoyed as to why parents think that video games are oh-so terrible. Now, I know what you might be thinking of bullstuff reasons. "Oh, there is no blood", and things of that caliber. I've had M rated games in the past. It's just that with all this violence recently, it's provoking them to think differently.

  • I play games on the Xbox 360 console.
You might've thought "I've bought many games on Steam without anyone knowing." Well, I do own an Xbox, and obviously they need to use their ID's to buy it themselves, so I can't sneak anything. Also, I wouldn't try to steal my parent's ID, and go all the way to a store to buy a game. First of all, I'm not that kind of person. Second, all the game stores are far away. Finally, what would the clerk think?

  • Once again, this is all mainly because of the recent violence.

These are things I don't want to hear:
This game teaches me things not to do in real life!
I'm mature enough! - They already know I'm a levelheaded smart boy.
I'll mute the volume and turn on subtitles and turn off the bad things! - Won't even work.
    I won't take it seriously.
It doesn't have any gore in it, just pixels.
    I don't see what's bad about pixels.
    Any bullstuff and unserious responses.
I know the difference between real life and video games!

So, I need a way for you guys to help me out with making them realize that I understand the things out in the world, and a video game won't make me any different.

if they know youre mature enough then why are they even concerned

The only time my parents questioned my game choice was when they heard all the f-bombs in Battlefield 3. Keep it mind they're Christians.

Sounds like youre in quite the pickle and I wouldn't know what to do either.

The only time I get pissed off in games in when your teammates are being handicapped, but it doesn't make me want to kill anyone.

Just explain to them that you're not a psychotic serial killer and that playing games isn't going to make you shoot stuff

Let's use some stories and articles I've read
A man in Norway shot several people and it was revealed He had played shooting games to practice for the actual shooting.
There is reasonable evidence that violent games can cause a violent person
There is also evidence showing that video games can help increase reflexes and mental abilities and decrease stress. So I can't say where I stand on this, personally

it kinda depends on the person who plays it and how they were raised
op seems completely fine

aspergers
swear to loving god the guys on the news were saying "assburgers"

The shooter in the massacre had aspergers
Why does Aspergers make a difference.
I have Aspergers too and i'm not a Flash Mober.

swear to loving god the guys on the news were saying "assburgers"
That's because that's how it's pronounced.

My parents jokingly make scenes about violent games I want, but they don't typically worry about it. I still make efforts to hide the ESRB label from them though.

crazy people will do crazy things. there were serial killers before there were videogames.

If you are divorced move in with your dad

If you manage to go to a store, try to buy an m game and state your right of freedom of speech. Video games are protected in that they can't not allow you to buy them if you're under the age on the box. Say that a case in California about not letting minors play m rated games was thrown out on account of it going against the 2nd amendment.

Saying violent videogames will make you shoot someone would be like saying watching The Professional will make you an assassin. Simply playing the roll of someone or something in a game does not make you become that person, fantasy exists and normal people can differentiate between the two. Just because a crazy person kills a bunch of kids does not mean that everyone will start murdering children, let's remember that murder on this scale hasn't happened in a long time, and it's only recently that a few crazy people popped up.

Violence for entertainment dates back a very long time. A notable example is the gladiators in Rome. Did people walk out of that arena and go murder other people? No.

practice for the actual shooting.
'Practice' meaning he was already planning on doing it, as far as your description goes, violent videogames didn't CAUSE it.
