I before suggested that the master server use Cloudflare, but people suggested against it because it wouldn't help speed up the site. However, the real reason I had suggested it was for their DDoS attack dissipation.

Badspot unknowingly confirmed it. He replied to a comment that was about a DDoS attack without saying it wasn't a DDoS attack, and I have a strong feeling he would have corrected me if I was wrong.

Furthermore, if you spammed refresh trying to get through the attack you would have gotten an error like "The server sent no data." This is pretty tell tale of a DDoS attack, the server was so busy serving the attack that once it accepted your connection (something that wouldn't happen if the server was down) it was unable to send content before your browser timed out.

There are many firewalls that can block the spam packets of a denial of service attack.

i think a few antivirus programs block your common ddos along with viruses and so forth.
