Author Topic: Possible Overping threat?  (Read 5064 times)

This is the worst attempt at DDOSing I've ever seen.

Pinging someone means a mere 32 bytes of data being sent to the IP of someone to test how long it takes to reach it.

"ping 96.41.246.10 -t -l 65500"

-l 65500 means "ping with a size of 65500 bytes", and -t means "do not stop pinging until the user presses Ctrl+C".

64 KB. The horror!

64 KB per person per second. With a ten megabit connection, twenty people is enough to drown out all real traffic. With a ten megabyte connection, that number leaps up to 160. Either way, his actually getting enough people take down either of those two would have to be a hallucinogenic-drug-induced pipe dream.

(I forget which is used for measuring network speed. I believe it's megabits but I'm not sure.)

So is that able to basically crash something?

Well, I saw on a comment somewhere that somebody's co-worker was seen shooting a stray dog with a nail gun. Me being my overzealous, dog loving self used the I.P. provided to attempt to murder his connection.

Oh dear.

I'm also have never had any experience doing anything along those lines before, so I'm not at all surprised that this was a poor attempt to do anything. In fact, looking back on this, the guy commenting probably just had a personal vendetta with somebody and faked a story.
So to sum it up, I'm an idiot and will fall for anything.

Er...
I might have kinda reported that post after I misread it. Good luck.

Nah, it's ok. I would deserve it for falling for what I did.

You do realize that is a low level form of DDoS but you could probably still get revoked for that right? I'm not sure though.

I think the DDoS threat is empty, general rule of thumb is that if they talk about doing it they probably never will.

Getting caught doing it could lead to a key revoke, its happened in the past if I'm not mistaken. And keys have been revoked for far less too.

That's just as well. I probably broke some rule reguardless if I was trying to do something in the name of justice. The best I can do now is apologize publicly and not do anything like that again.
