You'll need a decent picture editing program like paint.net or Adobe photoshop.
MS Paint will not work.
Using Paint.net (not sure about photoshop) select your background that you want to be transparent using the magic wand tool. Then hit the delete key.
Be sure to save the image as a PNG file to retain transparency.
