Author Topic: Would a wooden submarine be possible?  (Read 2506 times)

idk but isnt that like
illegal

i mean to use it, not to just make it. like you couldnt go cruising around in the atlantic with your submarine.

Fresh water, the ocean would probably be inhospitable for something that could be smashed in two by a wave, or a boat. And you can buy a semi submersible that's commercially produced so I can't see why not.

Other people have also built wooden submarines apparently, some rated up to 100 feet in diving capacity.
If anyone is willing to throw out a design that would be great.

Does getting wood on a wooden submarine make it drift wood?

Only if you put it through it's port hole

$116.91 is how much the wood would cost to build a 7 foot hull for the submarine.
$50 for the misc parts
$100 for a small outboard motor
$100 for a port window

Surprisingly not that expensive.

There was a television programme done in he UK where they built a wooden submarine and submerged it. It didn't leak, it worked like a charm. They were recreating it to disprove / prove a historical myth I think. They even had a mechanism to make it go up and down.

Only catch was the air in the submarine became toxic very quickly, you'd suffocate after just a little while. Of course if you made an electrical wooden submarine with an air filter and what not, sure, I guess it could work. But why?

(Oh and to clarify this took immense workmanship, you could not make one yourself at all)

Oh and just to add this reminds me of the Cow & Chicken episode where they make one. I used to want to build my own when I was 8 years old because of that.  :cookieMonster:

yes anything can be a submarine if its made airtight.

but weaker material cant go as deep without implodin.
Everyone is making submarines out of metal, let's make one out of bread.

Compact bread submarine- good for single use one way trip to seabed air-supply 25 minutes

Then watch as the walls get soggy and degenerate instantly.

Obviously you would paint the bread

Yes, with latex and use tooth picks for support!

The only weakness is the seagulls.
And water.
