The grandmother sacrificed her first born grandson or something like that to the demon in order to gain wealth or something like that. The family from the second realizes this and does that ritual to get the demon to go to the sister instead, which it does. However it comes back and kills them anyway to get the boy. Then in the fourth its irrelevant BECAUSE IT SUCKS ASS.

Imo about the Paranormal Activity not being scary thing, it is not scary to you if you watch it on a computer or television.

The whole effect of the movie relies on the loudness and in-your-face screen you get at the cinema. A theater causes a sense of tension and crowd-hysteria where people set each other off.

Thats how scary movies usually get their ground.
