A long time ago with Dorothy (HP Pavilion A6000), I noticed my memory count in Dxdiag and Windows System said I had 2GB instead of 4. Then I started getting bluescreens, followed by me panicking, formatting, system-restoring, etc with no avail. My computer finally died and I left it in my closet, lifeless, for 7 months.

After the 7th month I decided "forget it, there's gotta be something I'm missing here" and opened up the PC again. I powered it up, got BIOS and then a blank screen as usual. I thought "What can I do with the BIOS then?" so I ran HP's Diagnostic program, it tested the memory and failed. So it must have been the memory. I took one stick of RAM out and bam, it passed the memtest, so I reloaded and I could reinstall Windows.

This was way before I had any experience with hardware ever, so I was pretty novice about the whole thing.

anyway, more recently? I totally deleted ExplorerFrame.dll while trying to replace it and closed Explorer.exe, and then Explorer wouldn't even open. So I had to whip out CMD and copy a backup into place via command prompt. Luckly it worked...

I spilled Crush into a computer once and broke the computer completly.
More recently I broke a computer by taking out the CPU and accidently bending the prongs on it. (Really old)

My mother screwed up her PC by turning it off while she was uninstalling something.
At first, it was only the graphics that were screwed up. Now her PC has a hard time even turning on.

Tales of computer screw-ups you ask? Come sit on my lap son, I've got plenty of stories to tell you!

As some of you know, Europe uses a 230V electricity system, whereas the US uses 120V. To accommodate for that, the power supply in my old computer had a switch that would allow it to work with both 120V and 230V. One day my computer suddenly stopped working. I tried to reboot it a couple of times, but it didn't work. For some utterly stupid reason, I flicked said switch. As you can imagine, that was a VERY BAD IDEA. The power supply and most other components were fried immediately, and thick black smoke came out of the computer. It smelled burnt plastic in my room for the next month or so.

A more recent screw-up occured not so long ago when I came home from a party.  I was incredibly thirsty, so I grabbed a glass of water. But being heavily intoxicated, my coordination wasn't the best, and the glass slipped out of my hand. The water was spilled all over my laptop. Even though I tried to clean it all up imidately, it was too late. None of the keys work anymore, and I forgeted up 2 of the USB ports.

Dang, both of those sound bad.

I once left a plastic credit card on top of my computer-from-hell's (heatwise) fan. It melted overnight and clogged up my graphic card's fan and killed it. RIP GTS 250

tried to get one of those themes where it requires you to replace explorer.exe and it wasnt working and explorer.exe wouldnt open up, but i had a backup saved so i was able to fix it

I went into another tab, came back and saw this.

Kinda funny when you think about it.

Yupp, they are. The first computer was fried, the laptop still works, but only with an external keyboard. Luckily, neither of the machines were expensive losses. Thinking about it, I should probably stay away from computers. Now I'm getting nervous about the expensive computer I built for myself just before Christmas... Something is bound to be broken, knowing my luck. I'll better test it extensively when I come back from holiday :S

What the hell.. The melting point of PVC is way above 100C! Why is your computer that hot anyways?

First time I got Windows 8, I got it at a local mall. Something didn't seem right with the download. It was behaving all right after that. A week after, was the huge snow storm in October. One day, something happened to the operating system. When I restarted one time, a blue window came up. It said Recovery that stated the Boot Configuration Data file was missing some required information. I could not get into my computer at all. Even the Microsoft Store from the mall was confused.

So, then after the storm, they formatted my computer and I got another copy of Windows 8. It has been working perfectly from then.

Whenever I would get mad at my computer, I would either hit it (mouse, keyboard, screen, CPU, whatever) or turn the switch on the power strip on and off very fast.

CPU =\= tower

What if he smacks his CPU everytime he's mad? I do that too!

then you might want to put a fan on it

Yes, I'm enraged. Better pull out a screwdriver, remove the side panel, unscrew the heatsync, smack the CPU, and quickly reattach the heatsync before my computer fries.

No silly. I have a extra CPU lying around on my desk just for smacking!
