How in gods name is that a waste of money?

Please, please, stop posting about stuff you know nothing about.

Because a single HD7970 is $380

Two of them make up $760.

Nothing on that card is worth $1,500.

It is kinda waste of money. Seen from the perspective of the average gamer, at least. What you pay for with the Ares II is the fact that it is a unique, limited product. It is designed to give the maximum performance available in a single card, but it should be viewed as a collectors item, rather than a future-proof supercard. It will be outdated in 3-4 years anyway.

Let's not look at a stuffty offbrand first off.

That is a 3GB memory card, the one you pointed is a 6GB memory card.
The clock speeds are nicer, everything is nicer, not to mention the expensive ass air/liquid fusion cooling method.

All current cards will be outdated in 3 - 4 years, and yes I do agree that it should not be considered a resourceful card, but it is NOT a waste of money either.

Compare the ARES 2 to this;
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-293-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938

That is a card with the exact same clock speed, same memory clock and half of the VRAM without the fantastic cooling solution, it costs half as much at the ARES 2.
When you compare the ARES 2 to another card that can actually hold a candle to it you see why it's worth the money to an extreme enthusiast, such enthusiasts being the only people who would buy two of those 7970's anyway while also being less space-consuming, the ARES 2 is much smaller than even one of those 7970's

However, the actual physical memory of the card is 3gb versus 6gb, no this is not a huge difference but when it comes to being able to have that extra 20 FPS, in a gamers world it DOES matter.

The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus will always be THE BEST CPU cooler.

I thought the ARES 2 was a dual card? That means it works on par with two 7970's, so of course it's going to cost twice as much

Blockzilla was moaning about how it's more than twice the price of some stuffty powercolour 7970

Jesus christ, I've been trying to get the terminology correct, 'dual card' was what I was looking for.

It's the equivalent of 2 7970's

Are they trying to mock the MARS II or something? >_>
(for those who don't know, the MARS II was a limited edition card of which only 1000 were made, it was 2 GTX 580's on a single card that were NOT downclocked unlike the 590)

edit: Oh, ASUS made the ARES II as well as the MARS II.
I see what you did there, ASUS.

So we're all in agreement that it's not a waste of money then? (excepting blockzillahead)

Agreement made

EDIT: Removed junk

That ARES II technically could be the most powerful GPU right now.

Notice the 7970 X2. That's what the ARES II is.

Neato.
