I'd get Windows 3.1 over Windows 8 anyday. The start menu looks stupid and it's got tons of apps I'm never going to use.
start8 is 3 dollars

install classicshell for free. brings back the start menu, while you can utilize windows 8.1's increased speed and sleekness

Or I could learn Assembly and write my own OS.

Or I could learn Assembly and write my own OS.
why in the forget would you do that

why in the forget would you do that
Number of reasons:
1- Uniqueness of having own OS
2- Not needing to depend on someone else to fix bugs
3- High experience gained when making it.
4- Raging at the screen with the code instead of in the forums
5- I can make sure that security patches fix security issues instead of praying Microsoft fixed it.
6- dunnolol

Or I could learn Assembly and write my own OS.
how is this relevant

Pie Crust if you think writing your own OS is just "learn ASM and write the OS" then I have no words lol.

Most people don't even write their operating systems in assembly. Mine is written partially in assembly, but that's because I'm an asm freak and I can't get enough of that low level. The rest is written in C.

MS DOS 6 is in assembly.

EDIT:
I fooled kids in my school using an oldass compiler to make a DOS app and ran it via AUTOEXEC.BAT. It's easy to fool idiots. All you need is IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM. MSDOS.SYS also helps if you don't want the Windows98 splash screen to appear.

So you're going to spend near $3000 on a computer and then make your own os for it

I was joking, lol. I still think I should get Win7 though.

Well, if he was a researcher he could be writing his research software at the kernel level to achieve optimal execution speed. Single purpose operating systems are a real thing.

And BTW, Supercomputers don't use Windows and rarely use Linux. They use their own OS (most of the time using Linux's kernel as base) to support the highass speeds and memory they have.

The worlds fastest superpc runs linux iirc

Which is why I said "rarely use Linux" and "most of the time using Linux's kernel as base"
