[MEGATHREAD] Personal Computer - Updated builds thanks to Logical Increments

I have a big problem. I just built a barebone computer, and I can't get anything to connect to it as a monitor via the HDMI port on the motherboard. I don't have any DVI supporting monitors. I tried sticking a small GPU into it's PCI express slot so I could hook up a VGA monitor, but the monitor still never receives any signal. The motherboard does not beep, the CPU fan starts, and it otherwise turns on just fine. Does anyone know what I can do to make it's monitor output work?

Nup, all of the nubs used to light up with blue LEDs and the clock like thing in the center used to be a temperature gauge (broken too).

Those LED's would probably make it look worse as far as my imagination is showing me.
Personally I'd get a new case, but I guess I just can't understand the father/son aspect of it, I'd never let my Dad touch a computer I was putting together :l

I haven't brought it yet, but im using windows xp on this one right now. I saw an "update" option when buying windows 7 ultimate on microsofts website which will only then cost 140 pounds. But what sort of update is it? Can i install this version of windows 7 ultimate only on the computer that is using windows xp, or can i install it on another computer and use my old windows xp serial key for them to verify that i really own windows XP?

If he's going to be needing a CPU for rendering and stuff but still needs a budget option then I'd suggest getting one of the new FX Piledriver cores, I've heard good things about their performance over the Bulldozer architecture

I would get a processor from AMD's Phenom II series, they work a lot faster for the price despite being an older series.

The Piledriver cores fix a lot of the issues with the Bulldozer architecture from what I've heard, it actually puts them as an advancement rather than a stagnation

For $140, it seems as if you're just buying a copy of Windows 7. I'd imagine you could use it on another computer instead.

I've installed a few games on it, it's doing beautifully with them right now :D
So far I can run Just Cause 2 on max settings just fine. That's a huge step up from being able to run it at 640x480 on the lowest settings. :x

Ugh that sounds similar to me trying to scrape GTA IV along on my old computer with 800x600 on lowest lolol. I think I could get about 20 - 28 fps at the time.

By the way, Icy, what did you want a full rundown of my rig for? You never did comment on it so I'm left kind of confused

I just wanted to see what you had built because I was interested in comparing how similar our computer assembly approach was, given how I agreed a lot with your point about buying what you need with hardware rather than what you are made to think you need via marketing and cost.

Not hugely, I don't have anything against graphics cards that are closer to the cutting edge-- you had a nearly top-end Radeon HD GPU if I recall.

Certainly more than I'd pay for or want.

For my purposes the 7870 is the cheapest but best option I could've gone with, gaming is what I do
