FZEX is the model you want, yea

what does military grade mean

It's a buzz-word they use to describe supposedly above-average components, if their claims are correct then it should be a robust motherboard that can take the heaviest usage you put it through.

That's just how I understand it, though.

I honestly have no idea, maybe shock resistance of some sort.

Not really a selling point for me.

For reals, if you can afford it then make the switch to an i5 for sure. I did a week or so ago and it's just infinitely superior to my old FX-4350

Overkill
especially for an amd processor
Do you have any suggestions for another motherboard?

depends on your total budget for the build and what you want it to do. Then I could put the rest of it together for you too

any mobo that even has a basic pci slot at all tells me its kinda old.

Say $800 to $1000. My current build is aging pretty well but I figured I'd at least see what I could do to upgrade it/replace it. I need a nvidia card of some description and I'm thinking of sticking to an AMD processor to save some money. Hard drive is the one I was talking about above and I have a case already that should work.

Can't pci slots be used for dedicated sound cards?

modern expansions of all types use the x1 express slots now.

What kind of performance are you looking for? You can get high/max settings at 1080p easily with $1k

Yeah I know. Just having trouble matching up all the parts and finding specific models that are reliable and good prices for the power they provide.

When I'm building a rig on PCPartPicker I filter parts by rating and look for ones that fit my budget and then I look them up on review sites and benchmark sites until I find the best bang for my buck. If you don't have the greatest amount of knowledge regarding parts and brands then there's no shame in taking weeks to put together a build, you don't have to do it in a day. Being patient when picking parts to fit a budget is a lesson that I learned the hard way.
