Actually no it makes more sense in english to do it the wrong way. Generally when you get the pattern vowel-consonant-"e" as the last three letters of a word, the "e" is silent and the vowel gets a long sound.
Therefore "nime" as in rhyming with dime is more english than "ni-may"
Dividing syllablles like that is a very pacific islander thing to do, you hear it in hawaiian and japanese a ton.
