Ads have started popping up on the forums

That's some adware, can't remember what it's called.

You probably got one of those add-ons that turns links into ads, so it would do a quick Google search for "Dwarf Fortress" and the first ad-like thing that it found would appear there.

I get it sometimes too, if you have Google Chrome, go to Settings/Extentions. There should be some type of ad thing. On anyt other browser, idk.

Microsoft Security Essentials (Assuming thats what he has) doesn't protect against it. Malwarebytes does tho.

get adblock plus if your using firefox

Could you please post what browser you are using, and your operating system?

If you didn't download anything recently, it could be something unusual.
