I'd got 3DS just for Pokemon X and Y, but that's just me.

I personally love my 3DS to bits, and I just wish I had more games for it.

Smartphones are good if you have a use for them.
I don't use my phone often (which is a smartphone [If a bit dumb]) so I personally would only ever get as much out of a smartphone as I would out of any other phone. Which is the ability to make a text or call in an emergency.
Which for me tends to be to ask my Dad if he can pick me up if it's raining, which is difficult anyway because the touchscreen of my phone becomes essentially unresponsive if wet, as in the rain, and it has no physical buttons for me to press, so I can hardly make a phone call in the rain.

But if you want the phone for games and things, then I wouldn't consider it worth it, if you're not the sort of person who uses their phone a lot anyway.
I much prefered getting an iPod Touch to an iPhone, simply because I knew I wouldn't make use of the iPhone's phone capabilities, so I might as well just get an iPod Touch for it's Apps and things.

But yeah, I highly recommend the 3DS. It handles nicely, it's fun, 3D games are really enjoyable and it can still play all your old DS games (shame it can't play GBA games, nor GB games (which the DS/DSi couldn't either), but you can't have everything).
Or, just go for the one that best suits your lifestyle.

I've no idea if you already chose or whatnot, or if people have said what I have. Just giving my opinion.
I'm not going to read through all 15 pages on other people's opinion on a 2-options multiple choice question.

So you agree Nintendo is just trying to make a quick buck with sub-par games that the casual gamer only enjoys because they don't want a challenge.

Oh so you're that kind of friend who actually cares about the difference between a casual gamer and a "real" gamer.

All gamers are gamers and they will have games that are suited for them.

I love my 3DS it's really fun, you should get it

Why are you guys trying to convince him to buy a PSVita when he doesn't want one?

Because 3DS is stuff and PS Vita has Gravity Rush.

It's really hard to choose between a (handheld) game system and a smartphone. You can't compare them well.
If you want a phone that can play some decent games that isn't 3D, but has a weak battery when it comes to games, get the phone.
If you'd rather stick with only games with much better graphics, headache inducing a 3D gimmick, actual loving buttons, and Pokemon, get the 3DS. In the end, it's up to you.

If I could cancel my cell phone contract and trade it for a 3G Vita I'd do it in a second. I almost never make phone calls and a 3G Vita can text and it gets a phone number, and you can get a stuffload of data on it for nothing compared to what a cellphone plan costs. The touch screen is more sensitive and responsive than an Iphone 4's and it's graphics are far better than a Playstation 2.

the 3ds itself isn't bad, but there's like only one actually good game for it and that's super mario 3d land, even though it's incredibly loving easy and the level design almost entirely consists out of floating blocks. the castle and airship levels are the only ones that have actual level design.

"Super mario 3D land is the best 3DS game".

Let me laugh for a while.

...

No, you're wrong. Its either Mario Kart 7 or Ocarina of Time.

All 3DS games are bad. The only reason Ocarina of Time is good is because it's an N64 game.

i have to agree.

there's like absolutely zero good games for the 3ds and it's the reason i barely use it to actually play 3ds games: i find myself playing more old normal ds games than 3ds games because they're just all so loving boring and i don't feel like replaying them. actually, because i'm bored and i need people to realize this, here's a bunch of short reviews for all 3ds games i own!

super mario 3d land: kinda good game but it's too loving easy and the level design, not counting the airships and castles, entirely consists out of floating blocks.

i'm not saying this game is bad, it's actually pretty good but they could've done so much better, i mean come on. even super mario galaxy + galaxy 2 has better level design than 3D land and those games came out years before it, and the "galaxy" theme gives them an excuse to make bogus level designs. well, they are bogus level designs but it's actual landscape. almost never in mario galaxy + galaxy 2 will you find a level entirely consisting out of floating blocks and NOTHING ELSE.

new super mario bros 2: absolute lack of originality. the music, level themes, EVERYTHING is imported from new super mario bros wii. the gameplay, in theory, IS fun, but it doesn't FEEL fun. that might sound weird but anyone who's played new super mario bros 2 will understand what i mean. the coin gimmick is absolutely useless and just gives you countless extra lives: that's all it does.

kingdom hearts dream drop distance: fun game and a lot of new fighting mechanics, love it. but it's too short and the fact that when you're interrupted while playing as one character and then will automatically play as the other character is annoying as hell. it even gives boss battles a time limit, because when you "drop" as sora while fighting a boss and then go back to sora after dropping as riku, the boss' health will be completely replenished. it's a stuffty gimmick that should've been designed better but apart from that the game is pretty great and introduces a lot of new worlds, which i like.

rayman origins: absolutely perfect platforming game, one problem though:

this is one of those games that is made worse when it is ported.

list of changes:

- music quality has DRASTICALLY decreased and the looping is done very poorly.

- this game was made for the big screen, okay? what i'm trying to say: it is very hard to see your character sometimes.

- the graphics are great but it looks like filth on your 3ds screen because of the low resolution. it looks really blurry.

- removal of all teensies to play as, and a bunch of character costumes for rayman and globox. you only have like 3 costumes for each now, and that's normal rayman, blue rayman, dark rayman, normal globox, red globox and dark globox.

- framerate problems.

i should have bought this game for the PC or xbox or something: not for the 3DS.

mario kart 7: good game i guess, but got boring really fast, and the strange thing is i really don't know why.

also they need to stop making retro courses: it makes me stop wanting to buy these games. people want new courses: if certain people want to race on the old courses, they should play the old games. i would sacrifice an innocent child to finally see a mario kart game with 8 cups of which NONE are retro. it would be heaven.

paper mario sticker star: the game is fun to play i guess, and the graphics are amazing and the entire environment looks like it was handmade by an artist: but the combat is tedious. the sticker mechanic is a good idea but it was implemented really poorly. i eventually started avoiding combat a little to keep my powerful stickers for the boss battles of which, by the way, most of them can't be won without certain stickers.

sometimes they give you hints, for example: the world 2 boss' weakness is the baseball bat sticker and you fight it in a desert arena that looks like a baseball field, so it's a small hint and even then he can be beaten without that, but it's way faster with that sticker.

but then you get this: in world 3, you have to fight a gigantic blooper that leaks poison and eventually it goes into "poison rage mode" and you have to use a sponge sticker to deflect that poison, otherwise you will DIE. without a doubt.

but the hint for this only arrives after you lose against it like 3 times, and even then it's really vague: "you need something to deflect that poison!" the only reason i beat this boss in one try is because i watched a playthrough on youtube a little while before it came out where i live.

these kind of things also happen in the overworld. at a certain point in the game you have to wake up a wiggler in a forest so you can proceed, but the sticker you have to use could be numerous things: it could be a Annoying Orangeet, but it also could be another music item like the boom box or violin.

speaking of hints being vague: the sticker fairy that travels with you is absolutely loving useless in everything she does, except her paperize ability. i was stuck in world 3 at one point and i pressed the L button to obtain a hint on what to do. it was absolutely stunning what i got: "hmmm, this is a rather dark forest." yeah, no stuff.

the level themes in this game is also pretty uncreative and it's nothing you've never seen before in the original paper mario and new super mario bros, new super mario bros wii and new super mario bros 2: just a grassland, desert, forest, snowland, jungle, volcano, etc.

for short: this game is fun but it has a LOT of flaws and they seriously could've done better.

there, i reviewed every 3ds game i have. actually i still have one but it was originally a ps2 game...

one piece unlimited cruise SP:

...and it sucks. i was dumb and bought the game because i am a huge fan of one piece, but the game is mainly about collecting things to proceed, the landscape is easy to get lost in and you get absolutely no hint on where to collect certain things. i was stuck on one of the levels for more than a few months, purely because i couldn't find a certain item to proceed. i stopped playing when i was at the second-to-last island because i just couldn't take the constant backtracking, endless searching, finally having the item i was looking for and being greeted by another obstacle five steps later.

the only thing i kinda enjoy is the new marineford mode, which basically allows you to play through the events of the marineford arc. it's kinda cool because you get to play as pretty much all characters from all teams:

you can play as four teams if i remember correctly:

whitebeard pirates(whitebeard, marco, jozu, etc.)
impel down escapees(luffy, buggy, ivankov, mr 3, etc.)
shichibukai(gecko moriah, donquixote doflamingo, bartholemew kuma, boa hanrooster, etc.)
marines(admiral "aokiji" kuzan, admiral "akainu" sakazuki, admiral "kizaru" borsalino, etc.)

but even then it's just constant battling so that's not REALLY fun either.

if you want an actual game i'd rather advise you'd get one piece: pirate warriors for the ps3 because it's 95 times the game unlimited cruise and unlimited adventure will ever be.

that's all.

that's all.
You should try Kid Icarus Uprising. I found that game very well made. The comedy is a bit cheesey, but the gameplay is pretty solid in my opinion.

All 3DS games are bad. The only reason Ocarina of Time is good is because it's an N64 game.
Opinions

I bought got my 3DS on release day but my games never arrived. It honestly felt like a huge disappointment with games that were promised near release and not released. The console itself is alright, but the game lineup it had is what made me excited, and that never appeared.

However with Pokemon X and Y coming up along with the new Animal Crossing and also new Harvest Moon game, I think I have a little more faith. If you're really into these kinds of games, I strongly recommend you get a 3DS. If not, smartphone.

Why the forget does OP post question then defend the DS when people give the suggestion of smartphones. Like, wtf?
