Author Topic: TDM Rant 2 - Return of the Buttclench  (Read 1365 times)

I'm here to complain about TDMs, so you can look at my incessant whining and try to make sense out of it. This is a topic that really bugs me about the majority of the TDM's out there -- weaponry balance, and then knife TDM's. I will be using "Super's TDM!" as a prime example of these.

So. Here is the weaponry room. Good build style - quick and to the point. I'm going to point out the use of Tier+Tactical weapons, that's good. The main issue here is the mixing of different tiers. For example, note the Modern Pistol in the corner, with the revolver above it.

The Modern Pistol is free, which isn't an issue. It's a well-rounded starter weapon, that has the potency to not be useless at all ranges. The revolver above it, however, costs points. It has similar accuracy to the MP, but does a hell of a lot more damage, and headshots.

Here is the issue with this - the point-costing weapon is a complete upgrade from the 'base' weapon. This makes it possible, whilst using only that weapon, to wipe out any using solely the one below, with more ease. The one balancing factor is the revolver having less ammo - but that's not a huge determining factor. 1 headshot with this, as far as I can tell, is an instant kill.

The same example can be seen with the automatic rifle and the Light MG. The lower one is a lower-level version than the top one, whilst the lower weapon is free.

Summarizing, this creates a divide between players new to join the server, and ones that have been playing for a while. This TDM focuses on players that play more, and thus keeping a limited audience from truly enjoying the game. This example is not an extreme case of imbalance - using Glass's server would be a far more extreme instance. It also shows a lack of care for the way the game is set up. This method of creating a weaponry system is lazy and shows no respect for the people that take time out of their lives to play on your server. Please, stop doing this. A balanced class system, maybe? Something that supports different play-styles?

I'm also going to complain about knife TDM's as is done so much. I assume the majority of readers are going to know what I am talking about. There is no creativity involved with butterfly knife TDMs. It is ALL bandwagoning, trying to jump on the opportunity to become known within the community. Some people are going to love these TDM's, of course. I don't have an issue with that. It's the factor that the majority of TDMs nowadays are these stuffty knife TDMs built on non-creative floating platforms, colored with neon. People need to add an interesting factor to them, for there is no replayability value.

I know some of you will proceed to yell at me "WLL IF U DONT LIKE IT, MK UR OWN!!!!!!1!!1!." And sure. I respect that - for it is a respectable opinion that matters. I will say, that I might as well just do that. But I know some people that share the same opinion as me - TDMs need a complete makeover and reform, as they have become stale, repetitive, and moreover lazy in construction. So please, hear me out here: Be creative. Brainstorm. Come up with new factors in your game that make it new, fresh, and exciting. Allow it to be balanced for all play styles out there.

tl;dr: If you think I'm going to let you get away with being lazy and not reading, think again. Read the above.

Thus, discuss.

I actually agree with the Knife tdm stuff.

The weapon upgrades in tdm's only annoy me slightly, but people always have at least one OP gun that doesnt cost too many points to get. That, or the next "upgrade" is worse than the weapon before it.
It pisses me off to no end when people are lazy like that.

If I ever get this file server at my house built, I'm probably gonna host a knife tdm server.
though with a twist.

Hey

Buddy

You try making a shop with a gazillion different weapons in a reasonable amount of time.

Here, here's an option.

DON'T MAKE A SHOP, THAT'S THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM.

Here, here's an option.

DON'T MAKE A SHOP, THAT'S THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM.
This for every single shop based TDM.

What happened to the times where everyone had a set inventory of weapons like in the old TDMs?

shops that give players an advantage over other players just because they played longer are always terrible

it basically becomes an mmo where you grind to the next tier of equipment

Ability to play and have fun difference between good players and alright players before shops:
Alright----Good

After shops:
Alright---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Good

people who just joined the server=people who have been in the server for a while

People get the wrong ideas about shops. Shops aren't meant to buy weapons themselves, they're made to buy, grenades, powerups, medkits, stuff like that. It's wrong when people put the weapons in the shop, because the server basically needs you to be good with a stuff weapon to earn better ones. In a good TDM, all weapons should be available, and grenades and health packs and powerups should be at a cheap price in the shop.

Knife TDMs are crap. Absolutely no effort and thought put into them. Who the forget invented that stuff anyway. I've seen how they build the platforms, it's literally spam. They take an 8x8 plate, cover it completely on the top with 1x1 print bricks. Then they dup it onto a zone brick in midair, and delete the botom 8x8 plate, and replace it with ceiling 1x1 prints. So basically, each platform has 64 on top and 64 on bottom, add it up and notice that EACH 8x8 platform is 128 bricks. Boom. Spam in your loving face, you fellow Knife TDM makers can't argue with that. I might be mathematically wrong because I'm too lazy to do it properly, but I know I'm close.

actually because knife tdms often lack anything aside from the platforms the brick count is usually fine

What about in, per se, a death race? Is using a shop still wrong then? I mean, there should be something you can use points for, and if you're driving a 3 seat vehicle the people in your car may as well have weapons to use against other drivers... Balancing a weapon shop WELL is difficult, regardless of how you do it, but if you just give everyone all the same stuff it feels bland; oh, there's jimmy with the same exact one-shot rifle with little to no accuracy, better just spray n' pray and hope I hit him first.

There has to be a way to show people "yeah, I'm the top dog, I mean business, and I have no life so I invest all of my time into saving for this ugly assault rifle."

Honestly when people make these threads, they don't really give great fixes. The idea behind the shop is variety. What about TF2? Is that a bad game because that's a shooter with a shop with different weapons?
