Author Topic: Romeo and Juliet isn't all that romantic really.  (Read 2984 times)

It's very tragic, honestly. Almost everyone died, and therefore it is a tragedy. Shakespeare's comedys end with a wedding. Most people claim that its wonderful, romantic, etc. it really wasn't.

Discuss.

Well, okay.

It's very tragic.
Well it's a romantic tragedy.  While the ending is tragic, it is also romantic in that Romeo ends his life once he finds out that Juliet "died", then Juliet ends her life once she wakes up from her potion-induced sleep after finding Romeo dead.

forget Shakespeare in general.
All he really contributed that was really beneficial is his impact on the English language and making it less gay and better.

Tragic stories can be comedic or romantic you know. The only defining characteristic is that it needs to feature a main character who is a hero with a tragic flaw that results in his demise/failure.
