Author Topic: Windows vista to windows 8  (Read 1708 times)

my personal opinion/rant:

windows is stuff, in general.

problem #1: windows is unstable.

a primary cause of this is because of 1 bullstuff: the kernel itself.

it's stuff, dos was okay until they needed to dump it, nt is a stuffstain kernel that with every passing update is becoming more and more unstable.
literally half of my bsod's were due to ntoskrnl.something.

whoever's updating the kernel is having strippers code it instead of him.

linux i never had an os crash on me once.

windows got me as follows:

xp 4 crashes > vista 2 crashes > 7 - 7 crashes. > 8 i never used it because i don't want to torture myself with crashes and a stuffty UI.

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON HOW THERE'S A WINDOWS UPDATE EVERY DAY AND YOU HAVE TO RESTART EVERY TIME YOU INSTALL UPDATES!

and now problem #2:
drivers.

linux literally does a better job at handling drivers then windows itself, the same OS driver developers have priorities on.
the only driver that most linux OS's didn't automatically search for and install was the gpu drivers, which was painless also thanks to ubuntus proprietary gpu software installer it was a breeze.

windows i have to manually search for the drivers on the net, put them on another storage device/partition and install them one by one.
and don't say to have windows search online for drivers itself, even if i had manually installed network drivers it would still not find drivers for half of my stuff even though it's easily findable on the net.

problem #3: fragmenting (which will soon be obsolete due to ssd's, but that's about 5-10 years from now)

*sigh*

windows has this and linux does not, i don't need to explain this problem, moving on.

and now for linux issues since i'm going on:

problem linux #1: lack of games/apps

there's wine but that barely works so moving on.

problem linux # 2: battery eating friend.

use mac: get 11 or so hours of battery life on a 9 cell.

use windows: get 6 or so hours of battery life on a 9 cell.

use linux: get 3 or so hours of battery life on  a 9 cell.

this can be fixed in a kernel update and i don't go outside often so this isn't too big for me.

problem #3 ubuntu specific: fdisk disaster.

oh boohoo i booted up ubuntu 25 times i don't wanna loving scan my HDD, just start me up and only scan after a failed shutdown.

/rant in general.

i'll switch over to linux when garry's mod, cs:go and league of legends are ported over.

as a user of both linux and windows in general, i certify that using windows makes peoples lives 20% more bullstuff.

how does wine "barely work"?

how is someone even allowed to say that

it didn't work for 75% of the games/apps i tried so i consider that barely work.

then again my games are mostly new games.

damn, lots of hate for windows 8

i have it and it's really not that bad. :( i got used to the new start menu within a day, its not as bad as everyone makes it out to be

I have Windows 8 on my laptop and it runs just fine. There will be some compatibility issues but that's because it's new. I think there is a way to start W8 in desktop mode, but I don't mind it starting up in the tablet mode so I haven't changed it. I haven't had any problems and so far it's just Windows 7 with more stuff.

Anything I should know? I'll probably log on tomorrow morning before school to check it out. I'm assuming all keyboard controls are the same (windows L, ctrl X, C, V, etc)

Of course it's not going to be able to do games. The way that the game works is not easy to run in another program.

hahaha. Trymos.

You don't have to windows update every day.

hitting windows key + X brings up a nice little menu that looks like this

i knew this before i even used wine because windows apps in linux is only a dream.

if you want maximum security you have to.

Get Classic Shell on Windows 8. It adds a start button bottom left corner. :D

if you want maximum security you have to.

I obviously don't need maximum security then because I have no problem.

if you want maximum security you have to.
i only get new updates every 3 weeks or so, not sure why you're getting them so much

as soon as a majority of things are fully compatible with Linux, i'm making a permanent swap over to Ubuntu and backing up all my stuff.

it works pretty well on phones. or maybe it was a phone, i can't remember.
