also animes are plot driven stories, ive yet to see a cartoon that isnt just different scenarios every episode
not that i watch any cartoons anymore anyway
cartoons also dont have near as much of things like character development, continuing conflicts and lasting effects through a series
they are two different types of media productions that are easily recognizable

No, it's not an abbreviation for animation -- unless you're a loving handicap.  It's japanese animation, and it's as simple as that.  Your circle of friends don't define its connotation, let alone denotation.
