This German surname of SAHM is of two-fold origin. It was a baptismal name 'the son of SAMOBOR'; one who sold seed and grain.

Even with a bunch of searches, I haven't been able to find out what mine means. :s

WHY GOD WHY?!?!

My surname is Ellis and apparently it means Jehovah is God.

It was popular among the Crusaders and Christians during the middle ages. :I

One of my friends is called Ellis.

"Lockyer"
originates from Locksmith

Just for the heck of it, my full name translates to (roughly): One of God, A rock/boulder, by a river.

So, a rock from God by a river. I personally think this has something to do with being a fisherman.

Most searches just talk about Charlie Chaplin, but here's something I found.

Chaplin \ch(ap)-lin\ as a boy's name is of Middle English origin, and the meaning of Chaplin is "secretary".
Hm... I like Wikipedia and found a search result from it.
Quote from: Wikipedia
Chaplin is a surname of English, Ukrainian and Belarusian origin. Surnames of English origin are derived from the occupational name for a clergyman, while Ukrainian and Belarusian uses are derived from chaplya, meaning ‘heron’ or ‘stork’.
I looked up what a clergyman was and I found it was a religious term, as in a priest, a pastor or others. Personally I don't believe in God, Allah etc. so I can't really say that's one I like. Then I looked up stork and heron.
Storks and herons are bird. Hm! That's nice.
To be honest, I don't actually know what it could mean.

I'm okay with this.
One of my friends is called Ellis.

Orly? What is his first name?

My surname is a Germanic barbarian tribe that sacked Rome quite a few times. Known for allowing women to fight alongside the males.

It doesnt mean anything in google translate, but everyone who has this name seems to be related to music or irish people.
...considering i'm both of those.

so my first and last name is my surname? how do i find out what this means?

Oh.

Well, My last name is very rare, to the point where only like 20(?) other people in the world bear it. Hence I haven't been able to identify what it means. All I know is that it originated from Croatia.

Also if I told you it you would be able to identify me with a quick google so no go.

My last name is even more rare than that so yea I don't really wanna post it as googling it would just bring up all my relatives on facebook lol.

so my first and last name is my surname? how do i find out what this means?
How have you people never heard the term surname before? Your surname is the same thing as your last name.

Mine comes from a Spanish word that means "frying pan". No joke.
