Author Topic: Windows installer can't "expand files" please help.  (Read 763 times)

So I got my windows 7 cd, and I boot up with it, it works, I choose my now free ~284gb partition on my hard drive (along side my ~350gb partition that ubutnu's on), and try to install it. It gets thought the first step "copying files" fine, but then stops at 0% at "expanding files" and after like 20 minutes, gives an error.
I have a few files on the partition though that I think might be log files, I could post them if you think that'd help.

booting into a linux environment and using Gparted or a similar tool to shrink the EXT4/Linux partition

I believe there's a Linux utility called gparted that can do this. See if there's a GUI for that and then it should be pretty straightforward.

edit:
beat me to it

With GParted when you boot from your liveCD in Linux. Watch a tutorial because I don't quite remember how GParted works, but it's pretty self-explanatory.

Did anyone mention GParted?

I don't have a CD though.
I think I installed Ubuntu (12.10 I believe) from an SD card I've since cleared.

But I looked at the software center and found gParted and am now installing it.

edit: Installed, but I can't seem to do anything with it besides view partions.

I could have sworn Ubuntu had GParted installed by default

Well I can't unmount it, which I found out I have to do.
So I guess I have to run this from the bootloader or whatever.
Which I don't know how to do.

...or just create a liveCD image from your current ubuntu installation?

I don't know why I'd do that when I can just split the partition.

Making a Ubuntu 12.10 cd hoping it has a partition tool.

All Ubuntu ISOs have a partition tool I believe.

And I have installed 12.0(6?) before.

seriously?
I mean I guess I should like find a windows forum, but that seems like it'd be a lot of effort.
