The Afro-American Triumvirate has suffered massive damage, the death toll is estimated to be somewhere in the hundreds of millions. Due to the sparse populations in the region, some countries have had mortality rates in excess of 60%. The area is now marked by large craters and radioactive fields. The fallout has had astounding ecological impacts on Europe, a view from space shows what could be confused for autumn foliage- the red singed leaves of dying trees in what was once Germany's natural treasures, the Black Forest. Western European nations have had a large outbreak of radiation poisoning, if the situation does not stable soon, there could be a lack of enough medical supplies to treat the living, let alone enough morgues to handle the dead.
In the anarchy ensuing after the first year, the panic stricken Middle Eastern Federation's emergency plan completely fails after being flooded with refugees, being one of the few nations not directly attacked. The roads are choked with people and vehicles of all sorts, resulting in gridlock. The royal palace in Turkey suffers a direct hit from a conventional missile attack, and the leader of the Middle Eastern Federation, Helena, is killed. The missile launch was, rather ironically, of MEF design. A military base had been seized by the Red Earth, a local extremist militant group, vying for control in the area.
Sultan Colten as the next heir, hidden in an underground bunker, rises to power. Colten immediatley authorizes the launch of nuclear missiles. Two directly hit Eastasia, another detonates in its silo, killing the crew and irreparably damaging the silo. In an effort to gain popularity among a people rapidly losing all faith in their government, Colten attempts to construct 2000 temporary hospitals around the land. Due to the gridlock around major population centers (which are centered on the same rivers as the industrial centers), supplies are unable to be delieverd and few of the hospitals are constructed. Taking advantage of the situation, the Mediterranean Union fires several nuclear missiles to the defense of their ally. After all, they have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, the MU has come off rather lightly in the war...
If the damage to Africa appeared terrible, the damage in the Middle East was much worse. Entire deserts were fused into vast landscapes of glass, alien in appearance, and reaching temperatures of 180F (82C) degrees during day time. The sky is black with the smoke of burning oil fields, the forests of Lebanon have been toppled like matchsticks. The Dead Sea no longer exists, the entire body of water was boiled off. The few standing cities, clogged with vehicles, choked by smoke, without water or food, with fallout slowly settling into them are in chaos. Their are no existing numbers for the number of deaths, and there are no existing plans to calculate them, entire cities have been designated as dumping grounds for bodies.
