He did more than just cut off a lizard tail. He said "I thought it would grow back" that alone implies the act of chopping up the lizard killed it. He probably heard somewhere that a lizard can regenerate, what he probably didn't know is that only the tail regenerates.

He chopped up a lizard, legs, body, tail, etc.
