Author Topic: How do I deal with this person at school?  (Read 1799 times)

Well, to start off, I'm Catholic, and this guy's Atheist (Or "Pastafarian" as he says). I'm going to disclose names so you'll just see their beliefs instead. Also, the guy who is the main problem doesn't know I'm Catholic.

Now to actually start off. The Atheist been at our school for awhile, and he was kind of my friend. He hangs out with some acquaintances I have regularly, but during P.E. he hangs out with one of my friends more often (Also Atheist). He was fine until a couple of days ago. We were doing this warm-up walk around the gym, and then suddenly he starts talking how Religion can be so poorly proved. All he says is that a 2000-year old book doesn't really prove anything and that he could call anything Holy. Sense my other friend is also Atheist, he partially agrees with him. I am offended a little by this, but they quickly change the subject to Minecraft. He continues this for every P.E. class that I'm there also saying that some Religious events are caused by Aliens. Then a couple of days ago, he starts talking about "The Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster". He points out how it was made, to show a point of how made-up Religion could be. A little after that, I come into the gym and his usual group is arguing with him about being against Catholics and Christians in general. I shrug it off as the announcements appear on the Television. Then, last week, he was arguing again of how made up and stupid it is, and now he's rubbing it in the faces of other Catholics (not me as I stated before he doesn't know that I'm Catholic). He states that "Catholicism can not be spelled without cult" (obviously it's wrong). Now he's really getting on my nerves. Now, 2 days ago, he starts saying stuff like "Who wasn't actually a Virgin, Mary" and stuff like that. He still doesn't know that I'm Catholic, and continues this in front of me. I thought he would have enough common sense not to abuse the freedom of speech to offend others.

Now, here's another problem with this. I really want to tell him that I'm Catholic, and that he can believe what he can believe and let us believe what we believe. But for some reason I can't. I can get just really shy or something, even in front of people I know. It's not exactly shyness sense I can be around them, but I just can't say anything to them to defend a point.

Got any idea what I could do Blockland Forums?

As far as being a non-religious person with a devout Catholic best friend at a Catholic high school, this is just a case of someone exactly like this.  The sad thing is, a good portion of the people on this forum will jump on an extreme crusade-esque bandwagon of trying to prove you wrong and your friend right (as if it even matters).

Pastafarian is an "official religion", btw.  It's not an actual religion obviously, but it was a joke made up by a bunch of (probably) regular internet users.  Don't worry about it.

For the kid, however, there's not much you can do unless you go straight up to him and say "I'm a Catholic" and then explain that he shouldn't have to give a stuff about other people's religion so long as there's no problems out of it.  My guess is that this child doesn't seem too bright however and won't understand the concept of "it's my business, not yours".

Read this

Then proceed to get him to read it. If you can't get through the whole book, ( I know I didn't) the first few chapters should be good enough.

Pretty much what Nick said. Just talk about it calmly with him.

Yeah, I would suspect that people would try to go against me. About the Pastafarium, I didn't mean to use the quotation marks, I angry at the beginning because of personal problems, and decided this could calm myself.

yeah this makes more sense than murder

Pastafarium
now it's an element too?!

In all seriousness, just ignore the guy. If he's singleing out you, confront him, and then ignore him.

Trying not believing in imaginary wizards.

I'm atheist...
But I don't bash other people for having religion

hah, pastafarianism...
I remember playing civ 5 and a guy would spam the chat about his new religion telling everyone to have "His noodly appendage bless thee"

Trying not believing in imaginary wizards.
Yeah, and believe in a real wizard! ME!

religion is handicapped bullstuff and causes nothing but trouble.

religion is the most handicapped stuff ever. people are constantly fighting over...this. i still can't believe it lol. is it so hard to just keep your beliefs to yourself, wait until you die and THEN see if you go to a magical bearded man in the sky?

But OP is keeping his beliefs to himself. The atheist fellow is just stuffting on it anyway. If you want religious people to keep their beliefs to themselves and not to insult the beliefs of others, why not do the same for them?
