There can be custom bricks, but you probably wont need anymore than the default cubes. It can be time consuming depending on what you decide to make.

takes absolutely no custom bricks so don't worry about it. When I'm making terrain I think about Minecraft or just have a look at it's terrain style which inspires me. Also, don't build any symmetrical stuff, it just doesn't work.
