Author Topic: 3000+ pings?  (Read 2309 times)

I recently bought the retail version of this game at my parents house , everything worked fine (good pings on almost every server ) and it was crazy fun !   But now that I'm at the University again  , the pings of every server are CRAZY high. I can't get a server with a ping lower than 3000 !

But one thing you should also know it's that one time today I have found a server with a ping of 150...joined it and it worked perfectly , but that's the only server I've seen workable and it's gone now  :panda:

Please if anyone has any help or suggestions , how could I fix this ????

(btw I can't forward ports since I am on a University Networks :S)

Thats more normal than it is strange. A lot of servers have a lot of builds and stuff so that may cause more ping.

Woah that is NOT normal , i think you get the high ping due to all the other users on the network. Unless you can get less people to use the University internet theres nothing you can do.

What kind of interwebz do you have?

hey guys , all my other games work with a ping of 100 or less (half-life 2 , bf2 , guildwars ) I mean this ain't normal , the University Server is really really quick , what I thought it could be is that the port is blocked or something ... i dunno?

if ports 28000-28032 were blocked, then all the pings would just be dead and you wouldn't be able to connect to anything at all.

But I have to admit, this is a weird problem...
And I have no clue on how to solve it...

By the way, while we are talking about pings, what does a ??? ping mean?
(Not to hijack the thread or anything)

Very, very high, or an almost-dead connection.

I think.

I think.
Its connecting but no body knows how.

Well I dunno have you tried joining these servers? The ping mite be showing wrong and you don't know it, so try joining one and if you see a server that has a low ping refresh the page and see what the rest of the pings are.

It is a connection that either has a lot of traffic, is very distant, or is very poor. Ping measures communication delay (lag). A ping of 3000 means it takes 3 seconds to transfer a piece of data between two computers.

Which is awful.

Do you share your connection with a bunch of people? This seems to be the most likely case, if your connection is being provided by the university.

Er, closer to 30 seconds, not 3 seconds.

Er, closer to 30 seconds, not 3 seconds.
Ah that makes much more sense.

Guys , I did go in a server , the response time (ping) was about 3 seconds so i guess 3000 as a ping = 3 seconds delay.. Anyways , the other games I play work perfectly , like I said , Cs-Source , Bf2 and all other online games work with a nice 100 or less ping...

My opinion is that the ports are semi-blocked or something ... !

Dude, a port can't be "semi-blocked".
It can either be blocked, or not blocked. It's that simple.

However, I did get an idea regarding your problem.
Perhaps people on your university network use ports 28000+ for special tasks that you might not know about? Like things that the university staff does?
Perhaps the ports in question are congested with a lot of traffic...

Hey , Kirby , that would make a lot of sense , thanks for your opinion :)   But this really sucks then , I am pretty unlucky :(

Universities are starting to run a thing called packetshaper which can recognize what kind of information is being sent in a given packet and prioritize it in real time.  Mainly this is done either block or de-prioritize file sharing so the network doesn't completely bog down.  It's possible that Blockland has run afoul of one of the packetshaper policies in place.  I'm not sure though and I don't know what to do about it.

You could try it on someone else's computer to eliminate some of the variables (the demo version is enough to ping servers).
