Author Topic: i'm completely done with dropbox.  (Read 866 times)

so i just decided to take a look through some of old game projects for nostalgia reasons, and I discovered that half of them were completely erased.

these files included both small snippet libraries, and larger, more important files that would completely break the entire project if erased, and can't be recoded due to the fact that I can't really re-figure something when it's been months since I've touched it. plus how i shouldn't even have to loving do that in the first place.

i noticed that some more recent files were erased as well, and this scares me. i originally thought this only applied to old stuff, but it could actually impact something I'm working on now.

i'm not taking any more risks - i'm keeping what's needed in my dropbox and moving everything else out, then uninstalling. i don't know where to, but anywhere is safer than dropbox.

and to think i called it the best syncing service. pfft.

Flash drives are always nice to have.

Never had tha problem with Dropbox, but then again I share an account with a paid member soooo lol

yeah, i'm probably going to be using a flash drive from now on.

mediafire?
google drive
i've done some research and read that any sort of hosting/syncing/backup service can forget up files. i'll just do it myself since I can't rely on anyone to do it for me.

why would you use anything that isn't Google Drive

the main reason i originally liked dropbox was because linking and sharing files was easy and simple. storage space didn't matter since I could easily get more by telling more people about it.

sort of regretting that now.

If you uploaded files simply to STORE them, then that's your fault.  All the websites that allow you to upload items don't hold them indefinitely.  They state that when you create your account.

Just use them to share a file temporarily, then use a flash drive or removable hard-drive to actually keep your files safe.  Just... don't damage them which will require formatting.

The only website that was free that kept files forever that I'm aware of was megaupload, but that site was taken down by the... the FBI...

^ megaupload was put back up as "Mega" relatively recently

Mega will soon have a tool that will act as a physical drive on your system this way you can sync to it.

Was it one of those shared folder things? If so, one of your friends could have deleted it :D

>implying i gave ANYONE access to anything in my public folder

>also implying that they wouldn't just delete it completely instead of erasing its contents

I dunno, some people do stupid stuff

I usually just Email myself files since I don't need to host much publicly.
