Prologue:
The West has been the center of a booming technological advance for many years now. Many new businesses moved to the west in result, and along with their employees following diligently at their heels. This explosion in the population of businesses and people has put a strain on the local aquifers resulting in many of them to quickly run dry. Many cities offered large rewards to anyone that could find a suitable aquifer sparking a new 'gold' rush: many tried but failed. Aquifers that were found, were quickly sucked dry by the thirsty enterprises and populace. However, this new 'gold' rush ended as quickly as it began when an explorer by the name of Robert C. Pearson discovered a massive, bountiful aquifer. It was an ancient aquifer, sitting under the earth for many years, mysteriously eluding the constant probes of the growing horde of adventurers This ancient aquifer, currently known as The Pearson aquifer, could meet the water needs of the entire west for many years. Yet, due to its abnormal location, depth, and seemingly infinite size, it was advised that more research go into the safety of the aquifer before its use.
 
The warnings went unheeded.

With the water needs of The West met, they moved onto other pressing matters: The rising number of violent crimes. This number has been rising ever since the Pearson aquifer started to be tapped, but the western governments saw no correlation. Whole cities were engulfed in violence, and the fire of burning cities could be seen for miles. The West, finally realizing their mistake, issued immediate testing on all Pearson water sources. A previously undetected bacteria was found in all water sources, and it was quickly linked to the outbreak of violence. It worked by quickly overwhelming the bodies defenses, once it had done that it would attack the brain causing insanity. This bacteria was rarely lethal, but it could easily be passed from person to person. The East, acting quickly, put a quarantine on the West. This quarantine was enacted swiftly and without mercy for those fleeing the growing violence, and many were killed attempting the cross the quarantine line. Without help from the East, the infected, and uninfected realized that strength in numbers was the only way to survive.

What's happening now?:
This all takes place 35 years after the initial quarantine. In that time a massive wall was erected along the quarantine line preventing people from entering into the safe east. The survivors built safe zones to protect against the marauding hordes of the infected. The social and government state of the west could be compared to the Fallout games, but with slightly more organization.

The actual RP:
Takes place in the four corner states (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, their borders against other states are not impassible lines, you can briefly pass through them for rp things n such). The reason for this is to keep everyone in a small area to encourage rp. You're a survivor of the initial panic, and anything after up to this point. Wanderer around, make friends, kill the infected, Trade supplies, ect.

You can start out with simple guns, but don't expect to find ammo growing out of the ground, or falling from the sky

The areas around the inner zones are considered 'safe' while the outer zones aren't so safe.

Factions:
Zone defense network: Slightly less organized than modern day armies they protect the zones and their people from harm.
Pony express: Pretty much the West's default postal and delivery company, they hire anyone dumb enough to ride long, dangerous distances.
Wanderers: Not really a faction, just people with no home or an extreme case of wanderlust.
Capricious Catalysts Company: A religious cult formed not too long ago, they believe the virus is a punishment from god, and that all SZ's are preventing god's will from being carried out. They will do everything in their power to destroy a safe zone.
*East American Expeditionary force: They come from the safe East to reclaim the West. They aren't very nice to zone dwellers, some think that they're under orders to exterminate anyone on the west side.
*Barbarians: A.K.A. The infected. Somehow they manage to group up into large tribes without mutilating each other.

And they died and he inherited his fathers starfish-like personality, cold blooded personality and took his stuff and went off to venture after the water stuff happened. Yeah.

Background: Born and raised in the outskirts of Pheonix. After turning 13, his family decided to move to San Diego in an attempt to both find a safer home and to contact distant relatives. Halfway through the journey however, an infected tribe raided their caravan and both his parents were lost. The next day, a traveling group of horseback deliverymen happened upon the scene, and they agreed to bring him back to a safe zone. He was later accepted into the Pony Express, and has been wandering the wasteland since.

Faction: Capricious Catalysts Company
Background: Thinks he's some super-slick undercover spy and nobody knows he's slightly mental and isn't going to try to murder anyone, despite how obvious it is. His tactic to destroy zones is to start and lead an uprising/riot against it, but it usually gets him booted from the zone in question. Spends most of his days hunting down the 'antichrist' keeping people from allowing God's will to become a reality.

Background: After the inital outbreak and the death of his entire family Cayden took up the nomadic life, never spending more than a year in one place. After years of this he finally settled down in Hotel, and joined the Zone defence network soon after. Known by everyone in Hotel as 'K'

Background: James was one when the quarantine was originally imposed, his parents where visiting the area on holiday from England when they became trapped. His family moved around different safe-zones for a while before finally settling in Hotel and raising him. When he was 23 his mother died, and when he was 26, so did his father. James tends to wander around quite a lot but for the moment has decided to join the Zone Defense Network at Hotel
Other: Has a slight British accent from being raised by his parents, didn't tend to mingle much as a child.
