Author Topic: Mountain bike help/suggestions?  (Read 2024 times)

Alright, so I live in the city, but where I want to ride mostly is in the park, where there are twigs, dirt, broken/uneven stone tiles, etc. Also, all these sidewalks are not exactly flat, plus I'm not going to be riding in the street. In order to make sure that I don't destroy my bike, I wanted a nice mountain bike.

Now, I'm not too sure about price. My mother said that a nice mountain bike costs a bit, so to make a good decision, and that's why I wanted to ask you guys! Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Evolution mountain bike. I forgot its exact model and all but its a nice one.
18 gears, front and back brakes are pretty damn good. Easy to adjust seat, rides smooth. Only issue I have with it is the right gear box is broken on mine but I think thats my fault.
And its only 80$ or somewhere around that

Forgot to add that this bike has front suspension for drop offs and such. Also the tires are about an inch wide, 26in tall.

Since you're not really offroading you'd be better with a hybrid with 700c wheels then you'd be good on the roads too. I got a Specialized Crosstrail Sport Disc before I got more into road cycling, definitely worth taking a look at that or something similar.

This bike looks like it'd do you good since its treads aren't super thick. The bike I suggested is made mostly for terrains and not road, this bike here is way for suited for your needs. But the seat looks extremely tall, also I don't think it'd be comfortable having to bend way over to ride. Just lower the seat and you're all good when it comes to that.

you get what you paid for. :P

that's why i'm trying to pay a little bit more so that it lasts awhile. not sure if i'll need 18 gears lol.

i just want a strong bike that will hold up to the harsh concrete ground. these sidewalks can sometimes be a bit rugged. i heard hybrids are ok, i just wasn't sure.

the tallness of the seat would probably scare me, since if i fell, i would probably hurt myself, protective gear on or not. i guess that bike looks nice, but i just really have no idea about bikes, and don't want tires getting messed up and such all the time with what i've experienced when i had my first bike.

edit: oh geez 830 dollars

i think i'm more in the 400-500 range, especially since i'm a beginner, or at least i'm not doing 20 miles at a time or something

I got it for Christmas, the resource center at my school got it for me out of their own pocket money so I'm happy with it c:
It works great of course so no need to say its bad.

Anyways, as for speed don't worry to much about it. I fly around curves going 15-20. On this one hill I speed down going like 40 mph and then fling around a curve, only once have I wrecked going fast. I just got up and laughed it off. Then cringed when I seen how much I forgeted up (I made a topic about it) I wrecked going about 15 on a curve, slammed on my brakes and hit the gravel.

i cringe when i see how fast people are going on bikes in these videos, it only feels better when you're on the bike. i think i'm just scared of flying 1,000 feet into the air if i hit something. the bike i was talking about was from my friend, and it was his old one, so it was free, but i still messed it up.

Don't worry, hitting something and flying isn't to bad. Its the landing that hurts, just remember this: Tuck n roll.

get a carrera, ive had one for almost 4 years and its never let me down apart from the largest front cog taking forever to shift to and from

This bad boy is amazing when going downhill

If you buy a mountain bike, make sure it has disc brakes or you will be mocked by everyone who knows bikes.

Also, if it has Sunn shocks, it sucks.

Speaking of brakes I burned mine out today on my bike. I have those rubber ones that just rub against the rim.

Are the pads actually gone or do they just need to be adjusted?

Practically gone. I might be able to tighten them up one last time but that won't last long.

Look at these bikes, I own one, they're amazing.
