Author Topic: What is a port?  (Read 999 times)

There's multiple definitions I could think of.
The networking term 'port'
'Porting' something; eg from one language to another
Momentum made me think of USB/other ports

Be more specific, yeah?

He has leet in his profile. Neat.

you guys are richards

think of a port as a bridge that you and your friend want to meet on

there are like tens of thousands of bridges, and unless you specify one specific bridge, you and your friend will never see each other. your friend, in this case, could represent a game server or a website.

though you can say what bridge you want to go to, you can't cross it until your friend has opened the bridge's gate for you. opening the bridge gate is the same as opening a port.

questions?
Oh so the information that is sent to a website has to be confirmed by the website and sent back to you for the service requested to be granted?

Kind of like buying something on Amazon?

well, sorta.

when it comes to websites, the same port between you and the website is usually already opened. the only time you need to specify a port there is if the website has changed their own port. in terms of websites, ports are only involved in initially connecting to the website, and not transfers between you and the website.

Oh you're talking about a router Port.

Think of a Port like a Port, if the Port is open all the Boats with shipping containers full of informations can go in and out but if the Port is closed Boats can not deliver that information and the Port can not get any information from outside the Port.

This is why you should open Port 1-65535. Let the information run through you Brother.
