Alright so say if North Korea did manage to launch a missile at the U.S. Are the defenses really bad, or would they be enough to stop missiles? Would North Korea even be able to successfully launch a missile at the mainland? It seems the answers are yes and no, but I'm just gonna go ahead and ask.
Assuming their missile has the capability to reach our shores and not slam into the ocean, it would be targeted upon reaching the range of our radar, and then destroyed via various different types of anti missile technology such as ground to air missiles, high flying missiles, fighter jets, laser, ect. If it somehow managed to get passed all that it would still have to fly over almost all of the US to reach DC, which they will undoubtably try to strike first. I don't think they would have enough fuel in all of NK to get a missile that far, so it would probably hit someplace in the great planes. Assuming it successfully detonates upon landing, it would probably take out a few farmers and 4% of our corn supply.
