Author Topic: Port Foward help?  (Read 2772 times)

Try a different browser; a friend of mine had the same problem with Chrome
tried IE, didn't work either, close to same results.

Do you have some other program that could be blocking port 80 such as a firewall? try disabling your firewall.
Kaspersky? I don't think it has anything to do with this.

Read this for info on finding the correct gateway. http://www.ehow.com/how_8161989_do-gateway-ip-windows-vista.html

No. Port 80 does not need to be open unless you are hosting a website.

I already got my gateway, but I type into a browser and get nothing. Maybe it's my router?

That could be. Some routers only allow you to connect via a wire (so not wi-fi), so you may need to plug your computer directly into it and then try again.

Oh. I got Optimum if you are wondering. Anything about that company?

Well, did you try what I said?

What you said is kinda confusing.

When you say it only allows me to connect via wire, what does that mean? Also, my computer and desk is across from my router, and my sister's stuff and computer things are in the way of my router. There are also a ton of wires where my router is. It would be a lot of hassle to bring my computer to my sister's work area and plug in my computer.

Wait, you say you have Optimum Online? As far as I can tell, they only offer modems for their internet customers. Are you sure that the Optimum box is your router, not your modem?

What's a modem? As far as I remember, the times I had troubles with my internet and router stuff, Optimum came and fixed it. That give you anything?

A modem has only one ethernet port and usually one cable and/or one or two phone jacks.

A router has multiple ethernet ports but no cable nor phone jack.

Some ISPs give you a combo router-modem.

Err, (another stupid question) I will name the brands of my internet stuff. There is the thinner one, which is made by NETGEAR, and a thicker one that's made by Arris.

The Netgear device is probably the router and the Arris device is the modem.

Okay.

I guess (Pretty sure) that I am provided with Optimum Online SERVICE, because in Firefox or IE, and I just search in the address bar, I get search results with Optimum labled. So Optimum doesn't have the labels on any of our internet machines.
