No it's not, you could easily be able to survive by simply avoiding the zombies with the literal many ways of doing so, and even then you could simply grab the first weapon you see and you're pretty much set.

Equipment isn't required, it's merely a addition to make sure you can properly RP without being interrupted by the AI which is easily avoided via simply jumping over a loving fence. It's not hard, you're just too stupid to find out and consider it a run and gun scenario in which you must kill the zombies to pass.
