Cause you want to know what's more annoying than 'damsel in distress'? A 'damsel' who is stronger than everyone else and constantly has to tell the other characters that "just because i'm a girl doesn't mean i'm weak!" and often overpowers any character during cutscenes or is the protagonist.

The Damsel in Distress is a really really old/popular trope, how you use it determines how good the story is.

As for female characters having roles, they can be pretty badass warriors/wizards/thieves ranging from young to old.
