If, say, I know the name or one of the past names of a certain user, how do I look him up? I've tried to before but I can't find any such thing on the site.

I you type in the name in the box it gives you past names and current

Please remember apparently this search is caps sensitive. So if your friend is XxXxXDaNnYXXXxXX you'll never find him unless you remember all the specific caps.
