Author Topic: Torque 3D or Unity?  (Read 2953 times)

I'm going to start working on developing a game, learning to code etc. What game engine would be most beneficial, I don't really mind if one is harder than the other, if one is better I will use it. I figure Unity has more support than Torque but I don't know. I really like Torque3Ds features and being a Blockland player...I would just love to develop in torque (id be more enthusiastic about it in it). However if a game engine like unity is much better then I will use it.

Thanks guys! Please tell me other good game engines you have heard of, I am nt sure of what type of game to make yet, I just want to mess around for now.

Well, what kind of game is it?

Yeah I really don't know, most likely it will be something like roaming around in some fields with grass and finding hidden objects or something. I am suspecting unity would be better for this right?

So is Flash but both work out of browsers.

unity is too mainsteam.

Not only browser based.

If Unity was only browser based, Slender: The Eight Pages would be played in your browser.

I personally like torque better, it's more efficient with rendering.

No, but you can play it in your browser with a plugin.

Im gonna go with Torque, I really love how networking works on Torque, similar to blockland. Everyone downloads whatever is required, not like games such as minecraft where everything is basically almost client sided.

torque 3d does have the ability to export to a browser-based game if i remember correctly

it really depends on what YOU want. could be that unity would be better overall experience for the future if you're planning on going into a programming field since it can use C#, an actual programming language, instead of TorqueScript. unless of course you plan on modifying torque3D.

if you'd feel more comfortable working with Torque3D (which you may be if you've developed anything script-wise in blockland), i'd go with that. either way, they're both decent engines.

i feel like unity may be a better choice for a more 'professional' game though for some reason

Oh god I hate you now lol (not really just how you brought up some more points). I would prefer Torque 3D because I can also bring back to the community and make stuff later for Blockland. Unity 3D is closed source I believe and I probably wont ever expand the Torque 3D engine until I learn C++ (college) but I mean I don't see why game developers would give up that feature.

everyone here is going to say torque just because blockland was made with it lol

though to be honest, i'm still leaning towards torque myself

Torque isn't really complicated to use, it's just an out-dated engine.
