Author Topic: Shadows (and/or Shaders) have no intentional gaming use at our current state  (Read 2506 times)

What people realize is that blockland was not made in mind of super advanced computers, but for those who want to play something without having to build/buy computer.
Now its following the path of, GO UPGRADE AND GIVE ME MORE stuff!
Thank EA, you've inspired so many.

It's kind of annoying that us people with better computers actually get a less exciting experience though.
We turn on shaders because the game looks nice.
Suddenly we're in the dark, can't see stuff, and getting wrecked by people with stuffty computers, or decided to lower a setting.

Though in some cases it's the host's fault, they didn't adjust the settings properly, especially for something that's a pure interior build.
Just because people have an intel card in their computer, doesn't mean it's stuffty. I run blockland fullscreen with maxed out graphics settings(besides shaders) with an intel card, and never lag.

I did this on my netbook, your point?

My point is people are calling computers stuffty just because they run on an intel card. Read a little more carefully.

Running on full settings without shaders isn't really anything exciting.

Baked shadows are really the way to fix all of this then

Then you think of all the different ways bricks update, and then the day/night cycle.

Could you bake all the shadows included in the DNC?  And obviously baking would only work on servers that don't have frequent changes/additions to the build.  But it would allow for someone to host say.. A stealth DM in which shadows were required.

The problem with having it 'only work in certain situations' is that it makes a stuffload of complicated code for the engine, and could possibly take Badspot quite a while to implement multiple lighting engines in a single game.

As for a stealth DM, just make it dark whether shaders are on or off, then use brick lights around the build.

You make a valid point but its not technically "cheating" it's just exploiting.
Where's the difference

Shaders also change colors
Take the default lighting, and a gray wall
The wall looks gray

Now turn off shaders
The wall looks brown-ish ugly

Bump.

the only problem with baking is that it doesn't change lighting period. So players will still be lit up with everything else

Meh.. I disagree.

I don't think BL looks bad without shaders. I mean we were fine without them for 19 versions, why suddenly now that we have shaders do we think it's ugly?

And besides, there are a lot of people who can't use shaders, yes, but there isn't any evidence that it's most users. And how can you expect a game with graphics like this to run on some intel card or something? It isn't perfect, but on max shaders it looks pretty great imo

That has nothing to do with the OP.

And Intel cards aren't bad. Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Even if you ignore all the pictures comparing shadows to no-shadows
Therefore our developers kept the option to keep the shaders "Off" which can change the graphics of the game very much, and it's not so pretty.

tbh probably not. But I've heard people bashing intel so much since the update that I'm inclined to believe they're bad.

But it really doesn't matter. I haven't looked into it much and as you said, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. It's just my opinion

blockland lighting was ugly to start with
