Author Topic: Gulch Valley (Modular Terrain build)  (Read 5747 times)

I intended this to be a small build of just the canyon, being either a Team Fortwars or a TDM. I got a little too creative and just decided to build a whole little scape.

For some odd reason, and help me out here, I can't place bricks on my modular bricks. It shows up as 'Floating' any solutions? I had baseplate bricks work earlier but I dupped them on the ground around, and placed modular bricks on top. Normal stuff really, but I just don't get why it's not working now

Fixed it. Disabled Build zones. Even when "disabled" in server prefs it still screws it up.
Anyways, pictures!

SECOND EDIT
Added ramps to the side of the map so you can get up and down the canyon side.

It's around 8,000 bricks, and is consisted of modular bricks, and a few baseplates which you can't even see except the sides.

Again, if you know how to fix that little 'floating' problem please tell me, if not, you're free to rate.

I'm willing to post this simple terrain sometime in the near future for anyones needs, once I've gotten the 'floating' error fixed and have hosted it enough.

You did a nice job on the transition from the peak to the gulch. The gradual descent looks really nice. However, the peak looks kind of odd. I see what you were trying to do with it, but it just doesn't fit. Maybe you could axe the snowy bit and leave it as a mesa.

The gulch itself could use a little something to spice it up at the bottom. Maybe a river or something. I dunno. Also, it appears to be impossible to navigate, but I can understand that if you aren't using it for anything.

8/10
Anxious to see what else you do with it.

Turn it in to a Halo styled deatgmatch similar to blood gulch/coagulation/valhalla/ragnarok.

What my intentions were at first, Blood Gulch or Sidewinds kind of deal.

I wasn't quite sure what to do with the tip, but I think i'll leave it only because in reality this is a section off a large map and if you visualized the rest of the mountain, it would make a little more sense..

As for the canyon. I might add some ramps here and there, give it a way to get up, but apart from that I'm intending something in there alone.

Stillll need help with the floating problem. I'll try loading it on a friends server to see if it's any different.

I'll just leave this here then.

Are you sure you're using the right modter bricks? The default ones are called Brick_ModTer_BasicPack and Brick_ModTer_InvertedPack. Make sure there are no folders with the same name.

Also, make sure that the files are not read-only and your add-ons folder is not read-only.

This is cool, could you put up a download? I want to build some stuff in that cool terrain! If I do build something and if I even post a gallery thread credit will be awarded. It would be awesome if this started a new type of thread where it is just blank terrain that you can fill yourself.

I'll give it a look when I'm finished with my work.

Hah, it would be very helpful for people who are still terrain wanting, they can just download premade maps instead. It's kind of like bringing back the maps and stuff.

EDIT: I found out that the mod Build Zones, the one that gives you a zone to build in and you can not build outside that zone, forgeted up the build. I'm curious to why it didn't effect modular bricks, but normal bricks it did, even when disabled. Rest assured I disabled it and it's all working now, which allows me to continue the edits and build more.

I'll just leave this here then.

Haha yes, that. I built most of that terrain for you anyways Alk, you should have seen it coming that I would spew out more terrains.

Gonna host fortwars in a bit if anyone is interested
I lied.
Friends invited me over. I'm going to host this sometime this week though, and after a few of those I'll put the link up, as long as the thread stays alive.

canyon looks ew; if you don't recall basic geology/earth science they are formed by millenia of erosion by river and so cannot be in the enclosed shape shown in the build.

othrerwise it looks k except the mountain is kinda not really at a mountain height and the green doesn't match the canyon dirt (or you have some pretty intense microclimates to somehow make the canyon a desert while everywhere else has normal rainfall)

honestly, i was waiting for you to come in with your geography facts oh King Terrain.
thank you though.

haha np

also as a suggestion, tool around with making trees that fit in with modter; so far all I've seen are just badly mismatching normal medium-detail trees with modter. I'd suggest cube-based or simple-shape trees to match with the simplicity of the terrain features.

actual advice from you, good.
Yeah trees I was kind of debating over. Was thinking about stealing Wehrmacht's, but it would still seem odd. I'm thinking of just letting it be blank, letting the players put whatever they want, since the map is being used as a Fortwars and I don't want to take space away from players and all..

i like it, Dill. It's a simple concept - but the terrain is quite dynamic. There's no dull features I can think of about this, everything catches my eye in this build.
