Author Topic: Has CGI in movies become better or worse?  (Read 2020 times)

When I watch movies, I want CGI to be convincing. Perhaps thats not the premise of it, but it certainly does have something to do with that.

I think it is too overused. I hate it when cgi is used in anime to cut corners and save labor.

sometimes it can be out of place, very much, but isn't most anime done on computers nowadays?

Flash animation you mean? Flash has also recieved it's fair share of criticism. Just like when Dexter's Lab went from hand drawn to flash.

yeah that's what i meant. i figure you were referring to like, 3D things in an anime.

also i was watching fist of the north star and somehow those drawn explosions look so god damn amazing

It's like everything is hand drawn, but cars, planes, and mechs are 3d.

That's because it's rediculously labor intensive to get large 3d objects like that with proper perspective and all such drawn. So cell shading makes things easy.

seriously, it consists entirely of the uncanny valley on a global scale. the graphics, modeling, and animation work has gotten exponentially better in the last decade, but with every step, we get closer to what might be perceived as realism, so we distance it from it.

courage the cowardly dog

every cgi animation from that show made me stay up all night

Large hand drawn objects have been done before in the past, can still be done to day.

I always think of Howl's Moving Castle but I always forget if it was done in 3D, maybe I should rewatch it again without getting so immersed in it's atmosphere lol

Everything boils down to money my boy.

It's gotten better, there's been a few dips but most movies these days have incredible CGI compared to old movies.

Tell me something I don't know. CGI has made some interesting stuff in movies, but in cartoons and japananimation it is annoying. You'd get sick of it too if a show like MLP or Adventure Time lost visual consistancy in favor of less labor.

I agree that CGI has gotten way better over the years but some things just don't look as good if it was instead done in real life. I prefer humans acting as orcs with lots of make-up on over CGI orcs any day. Humans still look and feel way more natural than the best CGI you can get.
