The Eight Rules
Every Server Should Have

Often times when a user joins a server, there is a set of rules that they are expected to follow. Between servers, these rules can be very reasonable, or they can be easily abused (or they are just really stuffty rules like "no cigarettes.") More often than not, I find myself in servers where there are NO rules, players are just sort of EXPECTED to follow the unwritten code of conduct. Often, this happens to work fairly effectively, the more logical and experienced players remain, but the lesser players and the less experienced find SOME way to get into trouble.

tl;dr - I think we should, as a community, compile a basic list of rules amongst servers, not as a necessity, but as a reference.

Now, before I get stormed with questions, I know someone is gonna ask: Why eight questions, Adin? The answer to that is more or less my mindset. The way I see it, if a server is supposed to have five rules, then they can pick  five of the eight pre-made rules. Or, if they need ten rules, then they can use any of these eight that they like, and then add in the additional rules that may pertain to their server (no camping on TDMs, no spam on freebuilds, etc.)

Rule #1. Do not spam (in relation to both building, and the chat)
Original:
Do not spam is a big one.

Rule #2. Use common sense. If you wouldn't do it on your own server, don't do it here.
Original:
if you think you shouldn't do it, don't forgetin do it

Rule #3. Please report any badmins to the host. If the host is the badmin, deal with it.
Original:
Please report all badmins to the Host.

If the Host is a badmin. Get the hell out.

Rule #4. No instigation (bad mouthing a religion, putting down others, racism, loveism, the like.)
Original:
No controversial discussions. (such as, talking about religion or anything people will argue for hours over)

Rule #5. Follow the administration's instructions down to the punctuation. If an admin says stop, stop.
Original:
listen to goddamn admins. admin doesn't respond to your question? stop spamming the server with your question.

Rule #6.
Original: Report rule breakage to administration. Let the admins handle it, it is their job afterall.
Report any issues with other players to admins.  Don't take it upon yourself to handle the problem.

Rule #7. Treat others with respect and courtesy.
Original:
Be courteous.

Rule #8.
Original:

and yes, I plan to use these rules myself if they turn out to be any good ;)

Do not spam is a big one.
If its a server for strictly building, then build. If you do not want to, please leave. ETC
For TDMs: Refrain spawnkilling.

Please report all badmins to the Host.

wat
these are rules for within a server. Not for the host or for the game as a whole.
These aren't rules on how to HOST a server. These are rules for the players to follow WITHIN a server.

Four rules so far, all fairly good rules at that.

Rules for the players, not the hosts.

Don't be a richard
Yeah this is all I care to enforce usually. Codifying rules just leads to people trying to weasel their way around them. The more specific you get, the worse they are. Even something like "Don't spam" is a headache because then you have to decide where to draw the line between what is spam and what isn't.
#1: Use common sense.
Another good way to put it. Sometimes you'll want to have a few clarifications of what shouldn't be done in specific cases, but people capable of properly functioning in a social environment don't need to be told not to act like an starfish.

I believe common sense already involves everything.

I believe common sense already involves everything.
in a sense it does, but at the same time you have to define everything out for everyone.

the way I see it, the rules are the pillars of the structure that is your community. You have walls and the interior, windows and doors, but you need to fill in the cracks. You fill the cracks between server and rules, by "common sense"

It's a filler. It can't dictate EVERYTHING, because people don't all think alike.
rule #4 is bs

That's a joke right

That's a joke right

no

racism and loveism and putting down others is common on my server
it's all in joking ways though
