Author Topic: The Common Misconceptions Thread  (Read 3798 times)

There are a lot of common misconceptions, and I recognize a lot of these as things that were taught to me by my teachers. Yay North Carolina education!

Here are a few of the many videos on this.

My personal favorite is the "You swallow 8 spiders a year" misconception. That's ridiculous, because spiders love warm and moist places, making 8 a year far too low of an estimate.

AND FOR GOD'S SAKE YOUR BLOOD IS NOT BLUE BEFORE EXPOSED TO OXYGEN

i hate north carolina and i hate living there
thats not a misconception its a fact but
wow interesting videos!!

It's not bad besides the fact that wow there can be a lot of stupid motherforgeters here.
But, as I have said before, look at places like West Virginia.

I do feel kind of stupid now that I realize so many of the things I was taught were wrong.

Also, I feel like how Deja vu works is commonly misconceived too.

I honestly don't even think that spiders crawl into your mouth while you sleep.
Wouldn't they bite you if you did anything? But if they did crawl into your mouth, then I would think that 8 a year would be a good estimate, because chances are that there aren't that many spiders near where you sleep, and most of them would have a web somewhere anyway.

you use 100% of your brain, not 10%

you use 100% of your brain, not 10%
Not to 100% capacity though. But a lot more than 10% capacity.

was that sarcasm
because veins are blue because of light diffraction and stuff.

Just in case anyone actually thought it was blue.
Quote from: Wikipedia
Hemoglobin is the principal determinant of the color of blood in vertebrates. Each molecule has four heme groups, and their interaction with various molecules alters the exact color. In vertebrates and other hemoglobin-using creatures, arterial blood and capillary blood are bright red, as oxygen imparts a strong red color to the heme group. Deoxygenated blood is a darker shade of red; this is present in veins, and can be seen during blood donation and when venous blood samples are taken. This is because the spectrum of light absorbed by hemoglobin differs between the oxygenated and deoxygenated states.

could've just said that "blood doesn't turn red when exposed to oxygen because your blood carries oxygen"
