Author Topic: Where did all our video game AI go?  (Read 1134 times)

This article pretty much sums up the state where.videogame AI is in right now. It seems the more intelligent AI is the easier and dumber it is.

the article mentioned UT, so I just wanna say the AI in that game is not good. it's basically just a bunch of walking aimbots

it's basically just a bunch of walking aimbots
This
on almost any game
even on the easiest setting
headshot from absurdly long distance
(or I just suck at the game)

Oh my loving god.  It pisses me off how all the bots in Killzone 3 could melee you perfectly, even when they were half way in animation of the melee attack.

Want to play with good AI? Play almost any Source based game. Or play Quake 3.

Makes the game harder.

The combine in Half-Life 2 purposely miss their shots 70% and always hesitate to shoot first  while the marines in half life 1 are dead on perfect with no hesitation BECAUSE THEY ARE loving MARINES!

I'm still trying to figure out how the combine took over the world in just hours when the Marines are more deadly than the Combine.

The "aimbots" are a lot smarter than the AI that is programmed to purposely miss. A real person would miss by accident, just like the aimbots.

Makes the game harder.
uhh, not the point
the article's talking about artificial intelligence, especially tactics and stuff
the bots in UT (as well as many other games) just walk around aimlessly until they see someone, then they try to kill it, then continue to walk around aimlessly

and no
in real life, people don't have perfect aim

Sounds like every single real person that plays a video game, ever.

Sounds like every single real person that plays a video game, ever. I don't see the issue then.
people hear gunshots, pay attention to their minimap, etc
bots usually don't do that, with the exception of the bots in some games that magically find you no matter what

You can magically find a bot with the minimap, it's no different. The player acts the same as the bot.

I don't think I've ever played a game where opponents show up on the minimap regardless of what they're doing
(obviously excluding games where that's an option you can choose for custom games)

Err, Call of Duty?

and if it happens in real multiplayer, then I never noticed

Marines in real life have a high percent chance to not miss their targets in real life and they do not hesitate to shoot even for a second. Your "advanced ai" is dumbed down enough to cause the AI to purposely miss shots, hesitate a couple seconds after spotting the player and automatically forget where the player might be because they don't properly track.

You can literally simulate better AI through scripted events. Scripted events always do better than the actual AI itself.

cod black ops bots -

>watch killcam
>bot detected you in non collision bush that humans would have never have seen you in
>aims down sight
>shoots with no recoil
