Author Topic: Those who still use Firefox, to restore the Downloads menu...  (Read 1180 times)

For anyone who still uses Firefox, such as me, you'll notice the last Firefox update within the last day has completely changed the Downloads listing. Instead of having its own menu, it has been merged into the Library window with History and Bookmarks. As you'd guess, this is extremely inconvenient. Firefox barely keeps any information on downloads, causing an extreme amount of wasted space in having the entire library open for it. Besides that, when actually conducting a download, you will instead get a popup of a simplified downloads menu which, again, is very unfitting.

To retrieve the old Downloads menu, enter about:config into the address/URL bar above. Click Yes, then enter this in the search: browser.download.useToolkitUI Right click the entry that comes up and click Toggle. New downloads will now appear in the old Downloads menu again. There are some problems, though. Any Add-Ons which modify the old Downloads menu will no longer work. The Downloads menu itself will have no title on the top bar, which means it is not named anywhere windows are listed.

Was it just updated today?
Lol missed that part

I've never used Firefox to download stuff unless garrysmod.org glitches up on me and makes me download an HTML file instead of the zip file

I use a plugin called DownThemAll
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/

It's supposedly better than Firefox's default way of downloading stuff, but whether it is or not, i've used it anyway

I use this.

Some guy in the reviews is complaining about Firefox 20 breaking it, apparently.

Hmm. I guess that does provide its own Download window. I've used that for a while now, but I've never thought it a proper solution. I like my downloads being kept in a simplistic window, and I couldn't really imagine using their GUI for everyday downloads. I mainly use it for mass downloads.

Huh, I have no problem with it and am using Nightly (today I'm on v23.0a1).

Nightly? So that's what they call development builds?

Yeah, I don't know Chrome's name for it but every time I start it up in the morning I get new experimental updates and fixes. Nightly right now uses a much better Javascript engine compared to the main release. Surprisingly I've never had a problem with the browser being unstable or anything breaking.

Well my current problem is I had an Add-On that added an auto-shutdown button to my Downloads menu. Basically, once all downloads complete, Firefox will shut down the computer. This no longer works with the old Downloads menu, let alone the new one. I assume the Add-On maker will likely not include an update for the old version, either. There's probably other Add-Ons around, but that's beside the point.

what the forget is firefox

it sounds like a bad yiff artist

Cheers. Thanks for telling me this.

Only noticed last night that it had changed, and was a bit weirded out by it not opening it's own window.

It's a dangerous thing to keep Download's alongside Browsing history...
