Author Topic: "The Incident" and Ideas For Prevention  (Read 887 times)

If you don't know what "The Incident" was, follow these questions:

1. What exactly happened?
A phishing website was posted on the forums and people have been handing over their account information on accident. A certain user named "Snuffers!" was a victim. Whoever was in control of the account used it to post gore, research, spam, and other inappropriate images. Several topics in the Off-Topic section were terrorized by this mass spamming and several other topics were created that showed more spam and inappropriate images.

2. Who did it?
We know the account name was "Snuffers!", but we don't know who was in control of the account itself.

3. Can this be prevented in the future?
Here are some ideas to prevent this happening in the future:

I think a good idea would be if a certain player got x amount of reports in y amount of time, they would be temporarily stopped from posting until an admin takes action.

Maybe a filter to detect if x account is posting a lot of things about y in over z topics in quick sucession, temporarily (5min) stop the account from posting?

Set a limit on how many posts you can make in a certain time period.

theres a 20 second limit after posting

That's what badspot is for.

Also this goes in suggestions and requests

"Snuffers!" Was a user who apparently got banned, he went around posting intense gore and gay research all over the OT. Then posted like 20 topics regarding "The storm" and just typical spam. Rotondo was the only admin that showed online, but he was still offline at the time of the accident.

Nothing we haven't encountered before, Glass and his outbreak. I'm expecting more of these in the future, really bringing down  the moral of the forums.

Hahaha, no it doesn't. S&R is for weapons or addons, this is about Blockland.

What did I miss

Feel fortunate that you missed it. Just imagine going into Off-Topic and suddenly feeling something weird in your stomach about to come up.

There's usually atleast one of these mass-gore/research rampages a year, sometimes a couple.
Most of the time they just come out of the blue.

There was one a few years ago where someone just posted page-stretching images of someone tossing themselves off on a large number of topics.
Admins usually get on to it pretty sharpish and clean it all up. Don't normally get any repeat offenders in the form of Alts.

Blocking someone from posting following repeated reporting is a bit awkward.
It would be too easy for someone to go around and just report loads of posts for one person, or for a whole group of people to do it to stop anyone they don't like from posting.

And I'm sure there are probably some reports that completely escape the Moderation team, so it would be kind of unfair if someone was essentially banned until a moderator can get to them, which might never happen.

It's a nice idea and would have a good basis in an entirely trustworthy community, but I don't think those really exist, and it would likely just be abusive.

Lol, I'm imagining Badspot Key/IP ban him and subscribe his email to research or something, see how he likes it.

can you update the original post as you find out more information please? I gotta go for a few hours and I cannot be bothered to search through all the replies to find out what actually happened.
Thanks babe

Why would badspot do that?
It's pretty obvious that snuff wouldn't do something like that, he's a niceguy
He most likely fell for one of those crap phishing sites

User "Snuffers!" was hijacked and the person who hijacked his account started posting all kinds of disturbing images like, gore, scat, research, etc.

Lol, I'm imagining Badspot Key/IP ban him and subscribe his email to research or something, see how he likes it.
How does this help anyone?
