If you sign up you will have a bunch of them like r/pics, r/gaming, ETC, just unsubscribe from them all and then subscribe to smaller  subsreddits that are listed in those bigs subreddits descriptions. (On the right, scroll down a bit)

If you want to see if anything major has happened in the world go the the top bar and click "All"
