Hello.
I very recently decided to sign up to the NHSBT's Organ Donor Registry.
What this means is that, in the unfortunate case that I happen to suffer from a fatal injury or pass away peacefully, the organs within my body are capable of being transplanted into living patients in need of replacement organs, assuming my organs are of usable quality and are a match to the patient.
I'll recieve an Organ Donor card which I should keep on me whenever possible.
If I get into a car crash, or some other accident, it helps people know that I'm willing to be used for Organ Donation.
I originally recieved a form to fill in through the post, but never got around to doing it, although I wanted to.
My mother was against me signing up. She understands the generosity of the act, but says she couldn't imagine the idea of parts that were once me, now being in a stranger.
My mother respects my views and is fine with me being signed up.
It is possible however that, on death, family members can veto the donation, even if you signed up of your own free will.
You can also give permission on your deathbed or in your will (which is more binding than being on a registry), and your next of kin can also give permission too.
So, I ask you, Forums, what are your views?
Are you an organ donor?
Have you donated an organ before, or has a family member ever done so?
Are you for or against, and why?
Try not to argue for the sake of arguing.
Debate is fine, but if it starts to get heated or angry, it's best to leave the topic and cool off for a bit.
