Avatars Broken?

So I decided to change my avatar today, but it's giving me difficulties. I select the file and it shows the file name in the little box, so it's choosing the right file. I hit save changes, but when I go back to my profile it shows me a broken image indicator. I tried it as .JPEG and .PNG, but they both give the same result. The size of the image is 661 KB and it's 574x606. I'm not sure if my avatar privileges have been removed (they should not have, I did't do anything abusive with my avatar), so I'm confused as to why this isn't working. Are you guys having problems with avatars today?

What would you say I re size it to? It's an oval shape, so re sizing it to a square would make it disproportional.

I guess it was just too big, I fixed it.
Now it looks all compressed and poop because I scaled it down :/.

Yeah, it looks pretty garbage when it's scaled down. Can't sacrifice file size for quality I suppose.
