Author Topic: Learning Acoustic Guitar  (Read 2182 times)

I recently got one from my dad. He's had it for probably 10 years and he's never played it so I had to tune it and yadda yadda. I've had it for about a month now and I don't really know anything correct or formal or whatever. I've just gotten some stuff from strumming and messing with the strings.

Have a crappy recording of me playing guitar. Yes my microphone was $15. Please make fun of it.

I've gone gay for your voice. THAT'S ONLY HAPPENED TO ME ONCE BEFORE
Thanks, I suppose.
This is just like when I post pictures of myself. Emo Nation stalks them.

dear god lol are those all down strokes? You should learn strumming patterns
the "stupid app" you were referring to is called a chromatic tuner haha and a free one I prefer downloading is called "Pano Tuner" its really neat! I hear a lot of open strings, what chords are you using? There's a person on YouTube that does full guitar lessons for free and he's amazing at explanations. (Will look up and post when found lol) If you're serious into guitar look into investing in a capo.

Also, any info on what kind of guitar? Manufcaturer? What kind of strings? (Nylon or steel?)

Excuse the paragraph, I'm self taught myself with 2 years of experience under my belt and get all giggity to see a fellow guitarist  :cookieMonster:

Sound like bronze (more common than steel on acoustics) to me.

Also, if you're going to play like that, get a bunch of picks.  You can pick them up for a quarter or two each at the music store, and a lot of the time, you can get a pack even cheaper.  You can also mix it up with a couple of different sounds from the different picks- I'll usually use Fender heavy plastic picks, 1mm Dunlop nylon picks, or a 2mm Tortex bass pick I keep around for playing 7-strings and baritones.

I've always preferred to get better at stuff by myself through trial and error.

I've been using just fingers or whatever. Will look into a pick soon. Didn't know you got different sounds from different picks. I have a six string.

if the guitar has been laying around for a long time I would bring it to a guitar/music shop and have them set it up. Chances are it has dried up and warped a bit; and a new set of strings could change a lot.

Also, you should try learning some songs with http://ultimate-guitar.com it's easy to learn/start with tabs

I addendum to above, grab Tux Guitar and you can open guitar pro tabulature. Pro-tabs are the best for learning songs because it is essentially the song in midi format with the notes and such written out for you. I used it all the time before I was able to learn songs by ear rather fluently. If the song is complex or has crazy chords that I don't know about, I see if there is a pro-tab for it.

Were you down-strumming the entire time? Also, you don't need a pick lol. Learn to play with your nails and it sounds just as good. Sounds good so far though.

oh dear lord the mic quality + the old ass guitar + the terrible beating-your-guitar-to-death-strumming-pattern

my ears

There are actually difinitive sound differences between the nail and pick or whatever you use. Even the guage of pick. It's just preference.
