Author Topic: Should I join the Civil Air Patrol?  (Read 484 times)

I like flying and military stuff, but I really don't have the athletic abilities to really do the hiking and the PT.

Sure! Much of what they do nowadays is search & rescue or disaster relief.

Well people aren't born athletic. You can train and build up.

it's a nice idea
the CAP is barely military, though
and just in case you don't know, it's a volunteer organization
but, still, if you have the free time (and a pilot's license), it will definitely be a really cool thing to do

"CAP does not normally provide primary flight training for members.  That said, we do have a lot of members who are also Certified Flight Instructors and often willing to provide training to members at reduced rates."
also, apparently, not only is it a volunteer service, but you have to pay to be a member (how strange that is)

This is somewhat not true. People can be better built than others.

That said you aren't born able to run a 5:30 mile.

I could never run a 5:30 mile. I usually come at the 7 and 8 minute range. I'm just saying that those who say they think they can't or sit around all day can get up and get in shape. In order to get there you have to take small steps. The op can start taking small hikes and slowly work his way up to long hikes.

I was in CAP and I can say that even though its auxiliary, it can train you in some basics when you're ready to enlist with the big boys.

You can get better at PT. I saw kids in basic training go from doing 2 pushups to doing 40.
